What You Need Before Using UPI
Before starting your UPI onboarding, ensure you have the following essential prerequisites ready:
- Active Bank Account: An account with any NPCI-partnered bank in India.
- Registered Mobile Number: The phone number linked to your bank account must be present in the device you are configuring.
- Active Calling and Outbound SMS Plan: Essential for sending the automated hardware-binding verification message.
- Smartphone with Data Access: Android or iOS device running a verified network connection.
- Authentication Asset: Either an active Debit Card OR your Aadhaar details (linked to the same mobile number) to set up your payment PIN.
How to Register for UPI
Registration establishes your identity on the Unified Payments Interface ecosystem. Follow these core steps:
- Install an Authorized Application: Download a certified UPI application (such as BHIM, Google Pay, PhonePe, Paytm, or your bank’s official mobile application) exclusively from official application stores.
- Language and Terms Selection: Launch the app, select your preferred operating language, and review the terms of service.
- Grant Required Device Permissions: Allow necessary system permissions—specifically SMS, Phone/Device State, and Location—which are mandatory for hardware-level security binding.
How to Verify Your Mobile Number
Mobile verification links your physical smartphone hardware to the National Payments Corporation of India (NPCI) network through device binding.
- Select SIM Slot: Choose the specific SIM card slot that houses your bank-registered mobile number.
- Outbound SMS: The application automatically triggers an encrypted, outbound SMS from your handset to NPCI's authentication servers.
- Binding Completion: Once NPCI validates the device parameters against the mobile network operator data, device binding is completed, securing your account against unauthorized remote access.
How to Link Your Bank Account
Once mobile verification is established, the application queries banking networks to locate active accounts associated with your mobile number.
- Navigate Menu: Go to the Profile or Payment Methods menu inside your UPI application and tap Add Bank Account.
- Select Institution: Choose your banking institution from the list of supported entities.
- Secure Request: The platform sends a secure request via NPCI to pull all accounts registered under your validated mobile number.
- Choose Account: Select the primary savings or current account you wish to attach to your profile to generate your unique UPI ID (Virtual Payment Address).
Which Bank Accounts Can Be Linked to UPI?
UPI supports multiple types of financial accounts beyond standard savings accounts:
- Savings Accounts: Personal individual or primary joint accounts.
- Current Accounts: Individual current accounts and sole proprietorship business accounts.
- Overdraft (OD) Accounts: Approved overdraft facilities enabled for electronic debit operations.
- RuPay Credit Cards: Directly linkable to enable merchant payments (P2M) powered by your credit line.
- Prepaid Instruments (Wallets): NPCI-compliant digital wallets and prepaid payment instruments.
How to Link Multiple Bank Accounts
You can link multiple accounts to a single UPI application to manage funding sources seamlessly.
- Access Settings: Open Profile Settings and select Add Another Bank Account.
- Fetch Details: Choose the second financial institution where your mobile number is registered and let the system fetch the details.
- Set Default: Once added, designate one account as your Primary Default Account. Incoming payments via your phone number or default UPI ID will automatically route into this chosen account.
How to Set Your UPI PIN for the First Time
Your UPI PIN is a 4-digit or 6-digit passcode managed directly by your bank’s secure server.
- Initiate Setup: Access your linked bank account inside the app and tap Set UPI PIN.
- Choose Method: Choose your preferred identification method: Debit Card or Aadhaar Verification.
- Verify OTP: Verify the auto-generated One-Time Password (OTP) dispatched to your registered mobile number.
- Create PIN: Set your custom 4-digit or 6-digit PIN and re-enter it to confirm establishment.
How to Reset a Forgotten UPI PIN
If you forget your authorization code, you can reset it instantly without visiting a bank branch.
- Select Reset: Open Payment Settings, locate the specific bank account, and select Forgot PIN or Reset PIN.
- Identity Verification: Perform identity verification using either your Debit Card details or Aadhaar-linked OTP authentication.
- Confirm New PIN: Upon successfully validating the security code, create and confirm your new UPI PIN.
Setting a UPI PIN Using Debit Card Details
- Select Option: Select the Debit Card option during PIN setup.
- Enter Details: Input the last 6 digits of your card along with the expiry date (MM/YY).
- Bank OTP: Enter the dual-verification Bank OTP sent via SMS.
- Finalize PIN: Key in your new UPI PIN twice to complete configuration.
Setting a UPI PIN Using Aadhaar Verification
- Select Aadhaar Option: Select Aadhaar-based Verification during the PIN creation workflow.
- Enter Digits: Enter the first 6 digits of your Aadhaar card.
- Dual OTPs: The platform will issue two separate verification codes: an Aadhaar OTP from UIDAI and a Bank OTP from your financial institution.
- Confirm PIN: Validate both OTPs within the app, then define and confirm your new UPI PIN.
How to Activate UPI on a New Phone
When switching devices, security regulations demand complete hardware verification before enabling payment services.
- Install & Insert SIM: Download your preferred UPI app on the new phone and insert the bank-registered SIM card into the new device.
- Device Binding: Complete the automated SMS device binding step to attach the new smartphone hardware ID to your profile.
- Reconnect Accounts: Select your bank from the menu; the app automatically reconnects your accounts. Your existing UPI PIN remains valid and unchanged.
What to Do After Changing Your SIM
If you update your mobile phone number, your old UPI credentials cannot process transactions until banking records are synchronized.
- Update at Bank: Update your official mobile number first through your bank’s net banking portal, mobile app, or branch.
- Re-register: Launch your UPI app and initiate a fresh registration process using the new SIM card.
- Fetch Accounts: Re-verify the device and fetch your bank accounts linked under the new mobile identity.
What Happens When You Reinstall a UPI App?
Reinstalling an application clears local app data, requiring re-authentication:
- Fresh Device Verification: You must complete the encrypted outbound SMS step again.
- Account Recovery: The platform pulls linked accounts instantly from NPCI records without requiring manual bank input.
- PIN Continuity: Since your UPI PIN is stored securely on bank hardware rather than your phone, your previous PIN remains active.
How to Restore Access to UPI After Changing Phones
- Install App: Install the payment application on your new device and log in using your primary mobile number.
- Execute Binding: Allow the application to execute device binding through SMS authentication.
- Confirm Accounts: Confirm your linked accounts from the retrieved list. You can perform transactions immediately using your existing UPI PIN.
How to Set Up UPI LITE on a New Device
UPI LITE is an on-device wallet designed for instant, low-value transactions that bypass core banking server bottlenecks and do not require entering a UPI PIN.
- Access UPI LITE Setup: Open your UPI app settings and select Enable UPI LITE.
- Link Supported Account: Select a compatible bank account to fund the wallet balance.
- Load Wallet Balance: Allocate funds from your bank account into your UPI LITE balance (up to a maximum wallet capacity of ₹5,000) by entering your UPI PIN once.
- PIN-Free Transactions: Transact instantly for daily small payments up to ₹1,000 per transaction without entering your PIN. Wallet transactions operate independently and do not count toward your bank's daily transaction count limits.
