Biometric Authentication for UPI

What Is Biometric Authentication?

Biometric authentication checks a device-supported characteristic, such as a fingerprint or face, to help confirm that the device user is present. In a payment app, it may unlock access or support a verification step; it does not automatically replace the UPI PIN for every transaction.

Before you begin

  • Use an updated, official UPI application and a secure device.
  • Keep your registered mobile number active when the service requires mobile verification.
  • Check the feature’s eligibility, transaction limits and any displayed charges before proceeding.

Step-by-step instructions

  1. Update the operating system and the official UPI app, then open the app yourself.
  2. Look in the app’s security, profile or payment settings for the biometric feature; do not assume it is available on every account.
  3. Follow the on-screen eligibility checks and consent prompts. Use only the official device or app interface.
  4. If verification fails, clean the sensor or camera, improve lighting, check device permissions and retry only as directed.
  5. Use the alternative method explicitly offered by the app or bank, such as the UPI PIN or another approved verification process. If the feature remains unavailable, contact official support.

What to check afterwards

Return to the app’s transaction history or feature settings and confirm the final status. Keep the transaction reference, date, amount and any receipt if you need to follow up. If a debit, credit or permission does not match what you expected, use the in-app help option and contact your bank through an official channel.

Biometric verification does not mean you should tell anyone your PIN or OTP. Do not install an app or share your screen at the request of an unknown caller claiming to fix authentication.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Relying only on a screenshot, SMS or another person’s claim instead of checking your own app or account.
  • Approving a request without reading the amount, recipient and action being authorized.
  • Assuming all banks, apps, devices and accounts support the same features or limits.
  • Sharing confidential authentication details or following unexpected instructions from callers.

Practical checks before you act

Biometrics are a device-level convenience, not a reason to share credentials.

For current product rules, check the official NPCI UPI overview and your bank or payment app’s own guidance. Features, eligibility and limits can change.
